Gorakhgad and Machindragad have always attracted trekkers from across the state because of their fireplaces. The journey to Gorakhgad is through a dense forest cover that only adds to the thrill of a night trek!
Although the Gorakhgad fort is fairly small in size and very little is known about its history, it is the journey that makes the trekking experience exciting. The fort is believed to have had a strategic influence during the rule of Shahaji Raje. There are no historical records of any major fights taking place at the fort. It was used for monitoring the surrounding area by the troops for strategic purposes.
Also, the Gorakhgad fort was used during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for guarding the nearby region and as a halt station while making the journey to Junnar via Naneghat. Although the fort is not too large in size, it has sufficient availability of water and enough area for strategic convenience. It gets its name from Saint Gorakhnath, a sage who carried out “Sadhana” at this place.
The night trek to Gorakhgad will provide you with the thrill of a trek in the calm of the night. However, it is important to be extremely alert and careful throughout the journey. Although the terrain is not too difficult to walk on, you would be passing through a dense forest covering which requires you to take every step with precision.
Also, it is advisable to have a good night’s sleep before coming for the Gorakhgad trek as you would be proactive throughout the course at night. The last thing you would want is to feel drowsy and dozing off in the middle of the trek!
Once you reach the Gorakhgad fort, despite the nighttime, you would be able to witness its architectural beauty and see the ruins that have stood the test of time. In fact, the look of the fort at night has its own charm! The fort possesses rock-cut water cisterns that provide drinkable water all year round.
Once you make it through the forest at night and reach the destination, you can spend some time in the stillness of the night until the sun comes up and the dawn makes the surroundings even more beautiful.
