The Kalavantin Durg trek is a highly popular trekking route for beginners and nature lovers. The terrain in this trek is fairly simple and even, making it an ideal option for people with little to no trekking experience to have a fun trip.
Kalavantin Durg is located around 2,205 ft above sea level in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. Although it is a simpler terrain to trek on, there will be no lack of thrill and adventure throughout your journey to the top. Although the place is called Kalavantin Durg, there is no fort in the region. It is a pinnacle that was used by ancient rulers to keep an eye on the surrounding area from the top.
There is a common misconception within the trekking circle that the Kalavantin trek is a highly challenging and difficult trek to go for beginners. However, you can rest assured that the trek is at the most moderate in nature, and with enough precautions, you can easily make it to your destination without facing many hassles.
The journey to Kalavantin Durg would take you through an uneven trail, thick and lush green vegetation, providing you with immense thrill and satisfaction once you reach your destination.
You would encounter near-vertical stairs during the trek that are hand-cut and were carved with utmost precision during the 15th century. These giant hand-cut stairs have enough space for two people to stand on them at a time. However, the near-vertical structure of the climb can be difficult for someone who is afraid of heights. The key here is to focus on the steps ahead of you and not look behind or below.
One of the major highlights of your trek will be the plateau of Prabalmachi. This plateau adds to the beauty of Kalavantin and Prabalgad, attracting several nature and adventure lovers.
The trail to Kalavantin Durg would start from the base village of Thakurwadi. The entire journey can be divided into three distinct sections. The first section is a gentle ascent from the base village to the Prabalmachi plateau. Once you cross the muddy roads of the village, you will be led to a gradual climb up a stone-paved road.
This is a beautiful stretch of road with greenery surrounding you. If you make the trip during the monsoon, you will encounter a variety of flora and fauna along the way. Also, as this stretch is not too difficult to cross, you can enjoy a relaxing walk amidst nature and take some beautiful pictures along the way.
The second section of the trip would start from the Prabalmachi plateau up to the Col. The terrain here will change to a muddy and rocky road. Still, you will witness green hills on both sides, maintaining the beauty of the hike.
Finally, the last section of the trek would take you from Col up to the pinnacle of Kalavantin through fairly steep stairs.
