Unlike the more difficult and dangerous treks, this trip does not require you to be a seasoned trekker. It is suitable for everyone, including beginners.
Padmadurg night trek is highly preferred by trekkers across the state because of its thrill and adventure. The fort can be reached during the day as well. Padmadurg is essentially a seaside fort located in Rajapuri village of Raigad district in Maharashtra. Also known as Kansa fort, the fort is surrounded by the sea on all sides which is almost 20 ft deep at the outer periphery.
The Padamdurg fort was built by the great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1676. The fort was mainly built by the Marathas for challenging the seaport of Janjira controlled by Siddis. The trek to Padamdurg would provide you with information about the rich Maratha history and allow you to witness the fort that has stood the test of time.
After Padamdurg, the trek will take you to the Talgad fort. The fort is located 18 km from Roha city on the Indapur-Tala-Roha road. It is a hill fort located 1,000 feet above sea level. Travellers can take the Talgad trek from Mumbai,m Pune, Nashik, and other locations in the vicinity. The Talgad fort played an important role in alerting the Marathas against the enemy and protecting the trade routes from the seaports to the Maval regions.
The beautiful fortification at Talgad along the narrow ridge of Machi has retained its excellence and makes for a wonderful trekking experience. It contains small water tanks cut in the rocks for harvesting rainwater. At the main entrance of the fort, you will see an idol of Veer Maruti. The fortification is done in two layers with four water tanks on the top being available. Once you reach the fort, you get an unobstructed view of the Ghosalgad fort.
The trek to Padamdurg and Talgad forts is accompanied by a visit to the Kuda caves. The caves are located in the Janjira hills, 200 ft above sea level. They are a part of 15 rock-cut Buddhist caves located near the village of Kuda in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The caves are believed to have been made between the first and the sixth century.
The highlights of the Kuda caves include sculptures of two elephants at the cave entrance and the beautifully carved idol of Lord Buddha. You will also find several inscriptions and paintings on the walls of the caves with stupas inside.
The trek to Padamdurg, Talgad, and Kuda caves makes for an insightful, refreshing, and fulfilling trip.
