The Rajgad fort is a majestic fort, literally meaning the “King of all forts”. it is located 40 km south-west to Pune and is known across the country as the fort where Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj spent almost 25 years of his life. The fort is popular for its architectural beauty and its majestic size. It is often divided into four different sections on the basis of its geographical terrain and fortification. Moreover, Rajgad contains three plateaus called Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi, and Sanjeevani Machi. The center of the fort is called Ballekilla.
The trek would start by making the climb to Rajgad through Chor Darwaja. You would reach your destination at Rajgad after a fulfilling and fairly challenging climb amongst the hills. On reaching the fort, you would be exploring the plateaus, the different sections of the fort, and soak in the beautiful view from the top.
After admiring the beautiful of Rajgad, you would head towards Torna, another fort located at a distance of 5 trekking hours. Previously known as Prachandagad, Torna was the first fort captured by Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the young age of 16. Torna is often regarded as the fort that marked the beginning of a glorious chapter in Shivaji Maharaj’s life. When he took over the fort from Adil Shah, the sultan of Vijapur, the fort has very little construction and limited layout. Once he captured, he started constructing buildings and fortifying the place to make it more majestic and beautiful.
The Rajgad and Torna forts are considered to be some of the tallest forts in the state of Maharashtra. The Rajgad to Torna trek allows you to learn about the glorious history of the two forts and provide you with an adventurous trip along the way. Although you need not be a seasoned trekker to come for this trip, it is advisable to be careful in certain specific sections of the trek, especially during the monsoon season.
The time duration of the trek is kept 3 days and 2 nights to allow you to travel with peace and spend ample amount of time at both the forts. The silence in the forts once you enter them, coupled with the scenic beauty surrounding the forts is bound to leave you spellbound.
