If you are looking for an adventure full of thrills and challenges, the Harihar fort trek is an ideal weekend getaway option for you. Not suited for beginners, this fairly challenging trek will make you challenge your limits and provide you with an adrenaline rush like never before!
The Harihar fort is situated in the Nashik district in Maharashtra at an altitude of 3,676 ft from sea level. The hill on which the Harihar fort is located looks like a rectangular structure from the base village. This is because the edges of the fort are vertical in shape, giving it a rectangular look when seen from sea level.
What makes the Harihar fort trek challenge is the steep climb to the top of the hill through rock-cut steps that are inclined almost 80 degrees. The third edge towards the west is inclined at an angle of 75 degrees, adding to the challenges of the trekkers. It is advisable for the trekkers to be seasoned in such climbs and have decent experience in mountaineering/rock climbing.
In all, the climb to the Harihar fort includes 117 steps that are one meter wide with niches. Once you start the climb and cover a few steps, you would be walking below an overhang with a steep drop. As you go ahead, you would again be climbing steep stairs inside the rock-like Peth and Kothaligad fort before reaching your destination.
However, the beautifully scenic view you get from the top of the fort is worth all the challenges you go through while climbing to the fort. The view from the top allows you to see a range of peaks and forts, including Anjaneri fort, Basgad, Brahmagiri, and Utwad fort. Also, the look of the majestic fort is something worth remembering. The Harihar fort has a tapering plateau that is raised in the middle. The plateau also has a small temple of Lord Shiva and Hanuman at the fort with a pond in front of it. The water from the pond can be used for drinking.
The most important and thrilling part of the Harihar fort trek is definitely the steep climb up to the top. The rock-carved steps have notches that can be used to place your fingers to get a firm grip while you climb. If you are afraid of heights, it is not advisable to look down while you are climbing and concentrate on the next step that you are about to take.
Once you have reached your destination on the top, you can have a 360-degree view of the Sahyadri range. If you are trekking during the monsoon season, you will get to see lush green forests all around you once you reach the top.
